| Zoltan Kodaly, 1882-1967, is one of the most important composers of the 20th century, and the only one who devoted most of his writing skills to choral music. He is more than a composer, for had the Hungarian Revolution succeeded in 1956, he would have been elected President, because he alone had the confidence of the Hungarian people. He was also an avid folk music collector. Along with Bela Bartok the combed Hungary and all of the territory within 100 miles of Hungary for examples of folk music. Kodaly also wrote volumes of education music for students to be used from the kindergarten to the conservatory. The music education program in Hungary has produced more giants in music than any other country in the world because of the musicianship training that Kodaly created. Kodaly's music is 20th century but also warm, friendly and romantic. Delightful listening. |
